Volunteer Community Transport Driver

Do you enjoy driving, meeting people, and giving back to your community? This role can fit around your day – whether that’s helping someone get to an appointment on your way to work, giving a lift on your way home, or volunteering during the day if you have more flexibility.

We’re currently seeking dedicated Volunteer Community Transport Drivers to join our team and assist in delivering a flexible, reliable, and responsive door-to-door transport service for Capital Region Community Services (CRCS) participants. This position requires empathy and adaptability.

As a Volunteer Community Transport Driver, you’ll help older people, and people living with disability, get to medical appointments, shopping, seeing family and friends, and attending group social activities. For many, this support makes the difference between isolation and staying connected to their community.

You’ll be part of a friendly, supportive team, working alongside our Transport Coordinators to deliver safe, respectful, door-to-door transport.

This is a genuinely rewarding role where you can make a real difference, and we have a significant shortage of volunteer drivers across Canberra right now. If you have the time, even a little, we’d really value your support.

Mileage and other pre-approved expenses related to your volunteer engagement will be reimbursed if relevant to your role.

What you’ll do

• Provide safe, reliable and dignified door-to-door transport for older adults and people living with disability
• Offer friendly, person-centred and respectful support
• Work with our team to confirm trips that suit your availability, and let participants know when you’re on your way
• Operate in accordance with CRCS Policies and Procedures.

When you can volunteer

Trips run Monday to Friday, 6.30am to 6.30pm. You can volunteer in a way that suits you, whether that’s a regular morning or afternoon, a few hours each week, or helping out on your way to or from work. Ideally, you can commit to a regular day and time – whether that’s weekly, fortnightly or monthly – so we can provide consistent support to the people who rely on us.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A current driver’s licence with a safe and responsible driving record
• Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification with reimbursement provided by CRCS
• Familiarity with the ACT road network and Australian Road Rules, and willingness to drive across all parts of Canberra
• Access to a safe, roadworthy vehicle that allows participants to enter and exit comfortably and with ease
• Awareness of Work Health and Safety responsibilities
• Great communication and interpersonal skills
• The ability to be punctual and reliable
• A desire to support seniors, older adults, and vulnerable community members to live well
• Confidence using a mobile phone, including apps such as Google Maps or Apple Maps (or similar navigation tools)
• The ability to communicate with the Transport Coordinator to confirm schedules and share feedback and updates.

CRCS also requires all volunteers to:

• Report any convictions affecting eligibility to work or perform the requirements of the volunteer role
• Undertake screening as required by CRCS, such as medical, functional or psychological assessments
• Hold or be willing to obtain a satisfactory Working with Vulnerable People registration (ACT) and/or a Working with Children Check (NSW) and carry this at all times while volunteering

• Complete a National Criminal History Check prior to commencing, and every three years thereafter. Volunteers must also advise CRCS of any new convictions during their time as a volunteer that may affect their eligibility to continue in the role.

As part of our commitment to child safeguarding, we require all employees and volunteers to undergo relevant screening processes, including Working with Children Check (WWCC) and/or Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) checks and National Police Checks.
