About the Role 

As Practice Manager, you will lead the delivery of high-quality legal services to clients across the Broken Hill region, ensuring access to justice for some of the community's most vulnerable members. You will provide expert legal advice, representation and case management, including in complex and sensitive matters, in accordance with Legal Aid NSW policies, standards and strategic priorities. 

In this pivotal leadership role, you will supervise, mentor and support legal staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture. You will play a key role in driving service excellence, building strong stakeholder relationships and contributing to Legal Aid NSW's mission of helping clients resolve their legal problems and achieve fair outcomes. 

You are an experienced criminal lawyer and capable people leader who is passionate about improving access to justice for disadvantaged communities. You bring strong advocacy and case management skills, sound judgement, and the ability to manage complex legal matters with confidence. 

You thrive in a leadership role, supporting and mentoring others to achieve their best while fostering a positive, collaborative and inclusive team culture. You are a skilled communicator who can build strong relationships with clients, colleagues, the courts and community stakeholders, and you can explain complex legal issues in a clear and practical way.

Broken Hill is one of NSW’s most remote cities and the first to be heritage listed. With a population of around 17,000 and servicing a number of local areas Broken Hill is the hub for many smaller local communities. Located approximately 1,114km from Sydney, 500km from Adelaide and 300km from Mildura and serviced by Regional Express Airlines and Qantas, Broken Hill is also only 48km from the South Australian Border. Made famous by immortalisation in a number of Australian films, Broken Hill is renowned for heritage and culture in a remote setting.   
   

The Broken Hill office of Legal Aid NSW services Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Wentworth and surrounding areas. The office has a large number of fulltime staff as well as welcoming a range of visiting lawyers from all over NSW delivering local services including Legal Aid specialist services such as Family Law Services for Aboriginal Communities and Civil Law Services for Aboriginal Communities.

Essential Requirements 

• Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency   

• Undertake relevant pre-employment checks such as Working with Children Check, 

Criminal Record Check, and Conduct Service Check  

• Be admitted or eligible for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW 

• Provide a current NSW Practising Certificate before you start work with us 

• Have a valid drivers licence and be willing to travel to regional and metropolitan offices as required (including overnight travel)
