About the Opportunity

As Curator – HOTA Gallery, you will work across a diverse exhibition program spanning collection-based, touring, group, solo and Children’s Gallery exhibitions, alongside signature programs including the Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award, Energies and the HOTA Triennial.

Reporting to the Senior Curator, you’ll bring your curatorial expertise, research, writing and arts administration skills to deliver high-quality visual arts experiences and grow new audiences.

Please note this role is Part-Time. 4 days - 30.4 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to the development and delivery of an innovative program of Australian and international exhibitions, including temporary exhibitions, collection changeovers and Children’s Gallery exhibitions.
• Work collaboratively with the Exhibitions team to deliver projects, including exhibition briefs, loan requests, design development, planning and project schedules.
• Coordinate open-call exhibition programs and opportunities, including Energies and the Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award, from artist outreach and applications through to judging and exhibition delivery.
• Support collection management and acquisitions, including acquisition proposals, provenance research, copyright clearances, deeds of gift and Cultural Gifts Program administration.
• Support the Corporate Loans Program by identifying suitable collection works and preparing research and interpretive material.
• Produce high-quality, original and accessible written content for exhibition catalogues, reports, labels, didactic panels, websites, social media and e-newsletters.
• Manage exhibition web listings, ensuring information, imagery and content are accurate, consistent and appropriately presented.
• Manage contracts and artist engagements relevant to curatorial projects, including coordinating artist travel and associated administration.
• Deliver public talks, artist and industry discussions, guided tours and other audience engagement activities.
• Collaborate with Education and Public Programming teams to develop programs that deepen engagement with exhibitions and the collection.
• Work closely with Marketing to provide timely exhibition and program updates to support promotional activity and audience development.
• Support Visitor Experience staff and volunteer guides by developing interpretation and tour content and contributing to training.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with artists, galleries, curators, cultural organisations, donors, lenders, academic institutions, schools, contractors and creative networks.
• Represent HOTA at external events, industry forums, committees, judging panels and other relevant opportunities.
• Contribute to HOTA and EGC’s audience development strategy, with a focus on widening access, inclusion and diversity.
• Demonstrate ethical, collaborative and positive workplace behaviours and contribute to a high-performing team environment.

About You

You’ll bring:

• A tertiary qualification in art history, curation, arts administration, museum studies or a related field, or 3+ years’ relevant experience in a similar role.
• Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with artists and stakeholders to deliver projects on time and on budget.
• Strong knowledge of Australian and international contemporary art.
• Excellent research, writing, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• The ability to translate curatorial and art-historical concepts into engaging, accessible content for diverse audiences.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities and deadlines.
• A current Blue Card or the ability to obtain one.
• A flexible, collegial and reliable approach.

Desirable: Experience curating or coordinating programs for children, youth and families; collection research and administration, including acquisitions and provenance; and experience using the Vernon Collections Management system.
