About the role
POWERHOUSE PARRAMATTA OPENS 7 NOVEMBER 2026
Join the team bringing Powerhouse Parramatta to life
About Powerhouse
Powerhouse Museum is located at the intersection of arts, design, science, and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues. It is the custodian of more than half a million objects of national and international significance and is considered one of the finest and most diverse collections in Australia. We are undertaking a landmark $1.3 billion infrastructure renewal program, led by the creation of Powerhouse Parramatta; expanded research and public facilities at Powerhouse Castle Hill; the heritage revitalisation of the iconic Powerhouse Ultimo; and the ongoing operation of Sydney Observatory.

Powerhouse Parramatta opens on 7 November 2026, creating a major new cultural destination in the heart of Western Sydney. To support the opening period, Powerhouse is offering TAFE NSW students the opportunity to undertake a structured, hands-on placement as part of the Festival Volunteer team.
About the placement
This placement provides students with practical industry experience during the first three weeks of operation at Powerhouse Parramatta. Students will complete five shifts between Saturday 7 November and Sunday 29 November 2026, rotating through different areas of the visitor and event experience.
Students will have the opportunity to experience different aspects of event delivery, tourism, guiding and visitor operations. The placement is designed to complement classroom learning by giving students the opportunity to practise their skills in a major cultural destination during its opening period.
Students will work alongside Powerhouse staff and volunteers while building confidence in visitor communication, wayfinding, event operations, customer service, local destination knowledge and teamwork.
Placement Rotations
Across the five shifts, students may rotate through areas including:
Visitor Welcome & Tourism Experience
Welcome visitors to Powerhouse Parramatta and the surrounding precinct.
Provide information about the museum, festival activities and visitor facilities.
Respond to common visitor questions and provide a positive first impression of the destination.
Develop confidence communicating with visitors from a range of backgrounds.
Wayfinding & Guiding
Help visitors navigate between Parramatta Station, Parramatta Square, Powerhouse Parramatta and key locations in the surrounding precinct.
Build knowledge of Parramatta as a visitor destination and confidently share relevant local information.
Practise giving clear directions and information to individuals and groups.
Support accessible and inclusive visitor journeys.
Event Operations
Experience the practical delivery of major opening events and festival activities.
Assist with event set-up, pack-down and operational requirements.
Support visitor flow, crowd movement and event-day logistics.
Observe how teams communicate, respond to changing conditions and deliver events in a live environment.
Programs & Activations
Support workshops, talks, creative activities and community events.
Assist visitors to participate in activities and understand what is happening across the site.
Observe how public programs and activations contribute to the overall visitor experience.
Work alongside staff, artists, facilitators and other volunteers.
Industry Learning & Reflection
Participate in pre-shift briefings and end-of-shift debriefs.
Build knowledge across shifts and apply previous learning in new situations.
Reflect on visitor experience, event delivery and operational challenges.
Identify skills and experience that can be applied to future study, placements and employment.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Enjoy working with people and creating a positive visitor experience.
Are friendly, reliable and confident communicating with a range of visitors.
Are interested in events, tourism, guiding, visitor services or cultural experiences.
Are willing to learn, take direction and try different roles across your five shifts.
Enjoy working as part of a team and can adapt in a busy live-event environment.
Are comfortable being active and on your feet during shifts, including working outdoors for some wayfinding roles.
Are available for Induction Training 12 October at Powerhouse Parramatta.
Are available to complete five shifts between 7–29 November 2026.
WHY JOIN US
Be part of the opening of Powerhouse Parramatta and gain experience in a major cultural destination.
Apply what you are learning at TAFE in a real-world events, tourism and visitor experience environment.
Build practical skills across visitor welcome, wayfinding, guiding, event operations and customer service.
Rotate through different roles and gain a broader understanding of how major events and visitor experiences are delivered.
Work alongside Powerhouse staff and volunteers and build confidence, industry knowledge and experience for future employment.
