About the Position

The General Practitioner – Child Health & Development is responsible for delivering high-quality, culturally safe, evidence-based primary healthcare services to Aboriginal children and their families. Working within the Derbarl Kids Model of Care, the role supports early intervention, child development, preventative healthcare, and integrated multidisciplinary service delivery to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal children. This is a part-time 0.5 FTE Maximum-term position, with employment concluding on 31 July 2027, unless terminated earlier in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical

• Deliver comprehensive primary healthcare services to children and families in accordance with best practice standards.
• Support the delivery of culturally secure and family-centred care.
• Maintain accurate and contemporaneous electronic medical records.
• Maximise appropriate Medicare billing opportunities and compliance requirements.
• Participate in quality improvement, clinical governance and accreditation activities.
• Legitimately claim Medicare item numbers ensuring the accuracy of data and that full benefits of the system including new opportunities and item numbers are utilised as comprehensively as possible.
• Contribute to evidence-based clinical practice and service development.
• Support chronic disease management, child health assessments and preventative health initiatives.
• Participate in emergency and urgent care management within scope of practice.

Multidisciplinary Teamwork

• Work collaboratively with Paediatricians, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals and Aboriginal Health Workers.
• Participate in case conferencing, intake reviews and multidisciplinary care planning.
• Contribute to a positive, respectful, and culturally safe team environment.
• Provide mentoring, supervision and support to GP Registrars, students and clinical staff where appropriate.
• Contribute to a respectful, positive and culturally safe workplace.
• Provide active clinical support for professional training, mentoring, coaching and orientation of all clinical staff and student placements.
• Support the development and application of consistent clinical policies, practices and procedures in each community clinic.
• Support continuous improvement of clinical policies, procedures and service delivery models.
• Promote collaborative relationships across all DYHS programs and services.

• Maintain professional registration, mandatory training and continuing professional development requirements.
• Ensure confidentiality and privacy obligations are maintained at all times.

Selection Criteria

1. Qualifications:

• General and Specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a General Practitioner.
• Valid provider and prescriber number from the Health Insurance Commission of Australia on commencement of employment.
• Vocational Registration, or fellowship with FRACGP or FACRRM

2. Experience, Skills and Abilities:

• Ongoing participation in Continuing Education programs as directed by either RACGP or ACRRM.
• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and strict adherence to generally accepted codes of conduct within all forms of communication.
• Relevant client caseload management experience.
• Information management skills and use of computer systems.
• Understanding of Aboriginal Culture, values and health issues.
• Team leadership/training experience.
• Current basic life support skills.
• Knowledge of Work Health & Safety, Industrial Relations and Equal Employment Opportunity Legislation.
• Intermediate computer literacy skills.

3. Desirable:

• Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
• Experience/or training in maternal & child health.
• Report writing.
• Awareness of AGPAL standards and requirements for maintaining General Practice Accreditation.
• Accredited Supervisor with RACGP.

4. Other Requirements:

• Satisfactory National Police Clearance (not older than 6 months)
• Valid WA Driver’s Licence and willingness to travel as required.
• Current Working with Children check.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
