Product Design Engineer

IND Technology is seeking a skilled and innovative Product Designer to support the ongoing development and delivery of our multi-award-winning IoT powerline monitoring solutions across Australia, Malaysia, the USA and Canada. This exciting opportunity is ideal for a hands-on product development professional who enjoys taking physical products from concept through to production while working closely with engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams to deliver practical, high-quality, and commercially successful solutions.

Level of studies

Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, or a similar discipline.

Work experience and minimum years of experience

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in product design, mechanical design, or hardware product development, preferably in a manufacturing environment.

Desirable experience in:

• End-to-end physical product development, from requirements and concept design through prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and continuous improvement.

• Design of sheet metal and CNC-machined parts, injection-moulded plastic components, assemblies, packaging systems, and mechanical parts.

• Development of production tools, assembly jigs, fixtures, and testing stations to improve safety, ergonomics, repeatability, and efficiency.

• Creation of engineering drawings, manufacturing documentation, and technical/customer documentation.

• Product testing, FEA, design validation, troubleshooting, and data-driven design improvements.

• Design optimisation for manufacturability, assembly efficiency, BOM cost reduction, and product performance.

• Supplier coordination for quotations, samples, manufacturing feedback, revisions, lead times, and production requirements.

• BOM creation and cross-functional collaboration with engineering, production, operations, and other stakeholders.

Desirable knowledge, soft skills, and technical skills

Technical skills

• Advanced 3D modelling and drafting in SolidWorks.

• Strong knowledge of sheet metal, injection moulding, mechanical assemblies, tolerances, fits, and engineering drawings.

• Understanding of DFM/DFA principles and selection of manufacturing processes based on geometry, materials, volume, cost, tolerances, and performance.

• Basic knowledge of FEA and mechanical validation.

• Knowledge of engineering materials and their applications, including metals, plastics, rubbers, and sealing materials.

• General understanding of hardware requirements and standards such as IP ratings, flame retardancy, durability, and mechanical/environmental performance.

• Knowledge of electrical connectors, cables, and cable assemblies.

• Experience with 3D printing and rapid prototyping.

• Ability to create and maintain BOMs and analyse manufacturing costs and cost-reduction opportunities.

• Experience with Adobe Illustrator or similar tools for datasheets, installation guides, SOPs, assembly instructions, customer documentation, and internal technical documentation.

Responsibilities (Duties)

• Lead and contribute to the end-to-end development of physical products, from requirements gathering to production and continuous improvement.

• Translate stakeholder, customer, engineering, and production requirements into practical design solutions.

• Develop 3D models, assemblies, engineering drawings, and production-ready designs.

• Support production and operations with tooling, workflows, SOPs, assembly processes, and production documentation.

• Create and maintain BOMs and identify opportunities to reduce cost and simplify manufacturing.

• Coordinate with suppliers regarding quotations, prototypes, samples, manufacturability, revisions, lead times, and production requirements.

• Create technical and visual documentation such as datasheets, installation guides, support drawings, assembly instructions, and SOPs.

• Collaborate across engineering, product, production, and operations teams to deliver technically feasible and cost-effective products.
