Royal Hospital for Women is seeking a Research Midwife to join an exciting international research collaboration between RHW and UNSW Sydney, funded by the US Government's ARPA-H MOCS program ("Making Obstetrics Care Smart"). This study is developing new tools to measure fetal wellbeing during labour, aiming to reduce reliance on cardiotocography and improve fetal and neonatal outcomes.
Working closely with Principal Investigator Professor Alec Welsh and the UNSW research engineering team led by Professor Tracie Barber, the Research Midwife will play a key role in participant recruitment, screening and consent, scheduling and conducting study visits, and maintaining accurate study documentation — all in line with GCP and site protocols. You'll work alongside a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, sonographers and engineers on research that has the potential to make a real difference to outcomes for women and babies.
This position is currently offered on a temporary, full-time basis until June 2027. Part time candidates may be considered for job sharing. There is potential for the grant to be extended beyond June 2027 although this will be determined towards the end of this research contract by the ARPA-H MOCS team.
Where you'll be working
SESLHD is one of the largest local health districts in Sydney, covering a geographical area of 468 square kilometres from Sydney’s central business district, the beaches from Bondi to Cronulla and down to the Royal National Park. We deliver health care to around 930,000 residents across the local government areas of Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick, Bayside, Georges River and the Sutherland Shire. We also provide a key role in helping residents of Lord Howe Island. Our staff also deliver high quality health care across a variety of community-based services ranging from pre-birth to palliative care.
The Role
The Nursing and Midwifery – Our Strategy for Transforming Person Centred Cultures 2024-2029 guides our profession in the development of effective person-centred practice and healthful cultures within SESLHD. We advocate for shared decision-making, collaborative relationships, compassionate and person-centred leadership, and supporting innovative practices.
The Research Midwife is a Registered Midwife who functions within the Policies and Procedures of the Ministry of Health, South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD), Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) and the Nursing and Midwifery Division to deliver high quality midwifery care and research study requirements. The Research Midwife will be assigned responsibilities to a designated research study, and will be responsible for working closely with investigators, participants, and wider site and support teams. Your work will directly contribute to ethical, compliant, and participant-focused research that makes a real difference to outcomes for women and babies.
Clinical supervision at the point of care is the role and responsibility of each Registered Midwife within everyday clinical practice, in line with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Decision Making Frameworks for Nurses and Midwives.
