Child and Family Practitioner - Family Violence Focused

As a Child and Family Practitioner within Meli's Family Support and Care Services Directorate, you will deliver intensive Restoring case management to children, young people and families experiencing complex and high-risk needs. Through outreach, assessment and coordinated support, you will work alongside families to strengthen safety, wellbeing and stability, promote healthy relationships and support lasting change.

We're seeking experienced practitioners with strong child and family practice skills and an understanding of family violence and its impacts on children and families. While these are not specialist family violence roles, successful applicants will bring valuable family violence knowledge and experience to their work with vulnerable children and families and will contribute to strengthening family violence-informed practice across the team.

We are currently recruiting for multiple Child and Family Practitioner positions, each offering a slightly different practice focus.

In this position, your family violence knowledge will support your work with children, young people and caregivers who have experienced family violence. You will help families strengthen safety, recovery and wellbeing while providing consultation and guidance that enhances victim survivor-informed practice across the program.

In this position, your family violence knowledge will support work across the broader family system. You will help families address risk factors, strengthen parenting capacity and improve family functioning, while contributing to safe and accountable responses where family violence may be present.

As a Child and Family Practitioner, you will:

• Deliver intensive Restoring case management, outreach and evidence-informed interventions to children, young people and families with complex needs.
• Complete assessments and safety planning that support child wellbeing and family stability.
• Work collaboratively with children, caregivers, colleagues and partner agencies to achieve positive outcomes.
• Apply a trauma-informed, strengths-based and family violence-informed lens to your practice.
• Contribute to reflective practice, consultation and continuous improvement across the team.

Victim Survivor Focus

• Support children and caregivers impacted by family violence.
• Strengthen safety, recovery and resilience for victim survivors.
• Share specialist knowledge to build victim survivor-informed practice capability.

Family Safety Focus

• Work across the family system to improve safety and wellbeing outcomes.
• Support engagement strategies that address risk and promote accountability.
• Share specialist knowledge to strengthen responses to families experiencing family violence.

We value individuals who bring dedication, empathy, and expertise to their roles. To succeed in this position, you will have:

• A relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Welfare Studies, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Behavioural Sciences or related field
• An understanding of the gendered nature of family violence and the impact upon women, children, and families.
• Demonstrated experience in the family violence field, including case management, crisis intervention and/or therapeutic interventions, with the capability to engage people using violence within a whole-of-family context, in a non-collusive and accountability-focused manner.
• Demonstrated understanding of managing complex cases with strong case practice including client advocacy, therapeutic interventions and family support in line with evidence informed frameworks.
• Demonstrated understanding of risk and needs assessments
• Demonstrated knowledge of the factors that can impact on a parent’s ability to care for children and knowledge of the service system and resources available that can support parents, children and young people
