About the area

WABSI is a collaborative, unincorporated joint venture, representing the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Curtin University, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, the University of Western Australia and the Western Australian Museum.

This Institute manages a research portfolio relevant to the management of the State’s biodiversity resources. The purpose of the Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute is to: shape the strategic priorities for acquiring and managing terrestrial biodiversity knowledge; deliver excellence in terrestrial biodiversity research by fostering active collaboration across sectors and between researchers; ensure information is available in a form that is relevant and accessible to government policy makers, industry, land managers and other stakeholders.

The Western Australian Feral Cat Working Group (www.wafcwg.org.au) was formed in 2020 and oversees the delivery of the WABSI research plan to improve cat management across the state. The Working Group comprises a membership and advisory bodies involving all of the major stakeholders involved in cat management across Western Australia. In collaboration with research providers and land managers, the Working Group delivers on-ground impact across three pillars: (1) accessible information, (2) prioritised research, and (3) coordinated management. The WA Cat Management Symposium is also delivered by the Working Group.

About the opportunity

• Participate in the development and implementation of an annual work plan reflecting the Working Group’s priorities.
• Support the Working Group to achieve its objectives through coordination and organisation of meetings, workshops, and symposia.
• Coordinate the planning, review, and implementation of research activities, including seeking funding and sharing findings, as required.

About you 

• Completion of a relevant tertiary degree as well as at least four years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
• Experience and understanding of applied research in natural resource management or similar, relevant to feral, pet and stray cat management strategies.
• Highly developed organisational and project coordination skills, including time management, prioritisation, and demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively across diverse stakeholders.
• Excellent engagement and communication skills, including in the development of presentations, submissions, funding applications, online material, and communication materials for the media and a diversity of stakeholder groups.
• High-level interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, with a demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
