Join the Microbiology team at NSW Health Pathology Westmead and take the next step in your laboratory career in one of the largest and most comprehensive microbiology services in NSW. This Permanent Full Time Medical Laboratory Technician role offers the opportunity to work in a busy, fast-paced environment, whilst gaining exposure across the full spectrum of diagnostic microbiology which contributes to a 24/7 service that supports patient care across the state. The laboratory also provides a range of environmental testing services of public health significance, including drinking water testing using the Colilert system and Legionella investigations. As part of a highly automated laboratory, you will work with state-of-the-art technologies including Kiestra Total Laboratory Automation (TLA), Bruker MALDI-TOF, IRIS Microscopy, Alfred Broth Culture System and Metasystems Gram Scanner. In addition to this permanent opportunity, this recruitment may be used to establish various eligibility lists (eLists) for future vacancies, including temporary, part-time and casual positions, providing a range of pathways for talented candidates to join and grow within our team.
What You'll Be Doing
Perform a broad range investigations and testing activities within a busy 24/7 microbiology service microbiology, including specimen processing, culture plate reading, microorganism identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Apply established laboratory methods and procedures while operating within a highly automated environment featuring advanced technologies such as Kiestra TLA, IRIS microscopy, Alfred broth culture system, Metasystems Gram Scanner and Bruker MALDI-TOF. Support laboratory operations through the preparation of materials, maintenance of equipment and adherence to quality, safety and operational protocols.

Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operationsDemonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a Microbiology Department, including use of Laboratory Information Systems and Automation, Patient Systems and Quality SystemsAbility to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlinesDemonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectationsCustomer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staffDisplay initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environmentCommitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activitiesAbility and willingness to participate in a 24/7 rotating shift roster, including weekends, public holidays, night shifts, and oncall as required
