About the role
Waste Operations Officer (Ref: 1331)
About the position:
The Waste Operations Officer plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of the Meru Landfill Waste Disposal Facility, working across both the Weighbridge office and the Bowerbird shop. This role forms part of a rotating roster within the waste operations team to ensure both facilities remain functional and well-maintained. At the Bowerbird, the officer assists customers, manages donations, and processes reusable goods for resale. At the Weighbridge, the officer ensures accurate classification, weighing, and recording of waste loads, maintains compliance with site procedures, licence conditions and supports general site operations.
The City is looking to fill one permanent and one fixed-term full-time role. The fixed-term role is offered as up to 12-month contract to cover a period of Parental leave.
Key accountabilities:
Operate all weighbridge functions, maintain accurate waste records, and ensure compliance with regulations.
Collect and process fees/payments (both cash and credit card) and balance the till on a daily basis in accordance with Council administrative and financial procedures.
Accurately classify and maintain details of waste entering and leaving the Meru Site, using the Waste Services Software.
Undertake daily tasks in the Bowerbird shop including sales, customer service, pricing, creating displays, general housekeeping, accepting donations and stock adjustment.
Proactively enhance customers’ knowledge of recycling and how to reuse and repurpose shop items. Provide customers with additional waste related information and assistance as needed.

Position requirements:
The successful applicant will ideally have previous experience in hospitality, retail or customer service, or demonstrated experience in a similar role. A willingness to learn, along with good customer service and communication skills, will also be highly regarded.
Completion of a pre-employment medical including alcohol and other substances testing is required of all positions at the City.
Remuneration and benefits:
A salary starting from $71,211 per annum or $36.04 per hour will be offered dependent on knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications.

C Class Driver’s License

Strong numeracy skills, with experience in processing financial transactions, including cash register reconciliation and balancing
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to de-escalate challenging interactions
