About the role
We are an established metal fabrication and manufacturing business delivering high-quality custom work from design and estimation through to workshop production and on-site installation.
Our fabrication team is supported by a strong office, operations, drafting and estimating team. We operate in a practical, fast-paced environment where teamwork, clear communication, quality and reliable scheduling matter.
The Workshop Coordinator provides confident, hands-on leadership to a small team of tradespeople and apprentices while remaining actively involved in fabrication, production and site work.
This is not your average coordination role. You will organise daily and weekly work, allocate responsibilities, conduct pre-start meetings, monitor progress and directly address performance, behaviour or quality issues.
You will work closely with the office, drafting and estimating teams to prepare upcoming projects, resolve practical production issues and keep work moving to schedule. You will have the support and authority to lead effectively and will be accountable for the areas under your control.
Provide confident, hands-on leadership across workshop and on-site fabrication activities.
Take responsibility for the daily organisation, performance and direction of the team.
Set clear expectations for productivity, quality, behaviour, teamwork and timeframes through daily pre-start meetings.
Ensure employees understand what must be completed, by when and to what standard.
Allocate work according to project requirements, employee capabilities and available resources.
Hold employees accountable and address performance, behaviour or quality issues promptly and professionally.
Recognise strong performance and encourage employees who contribute positively to the team.
Make practical decisions, resolve routine issues and escalate significant matters with potential solutions.
Monitor progress and address delays before they affect project schedules.
Keep the office team informed of progress, material requirements, delays and production issues.
Provide fabrication input and help refine designs when production issues arise.
Ensure drawing revisions and design changes are clearly communicated and correctly implemented.
Confirm the team is working from the correct and current drawings.
Inspect work during production, correct problems early and help prevent repeat issues.
Ensure completed work is accurate and ready for delivery, installation or customer handover.
Lead and participate in on-site installation, modification and fabrication work.
Coordinate projects from workshop production through to on-site completion.
Ensure the team arrives prepared with the correct drawings, tools, materials and equipment.
Resolve practical installation issues and communicate variations, delays or design changes to the office team.
Represent the business professionally and ensure work is safely and successfully completed.
Build a team culture based on accountability, pride, respect, teamwork and high standards.
Lead by example and address behaviour or attitudes that affect the team, productivity or culture.
Promote a safe and professional environment across workshop and site activities.
Ensure safety procedures, PPE requirements and site-specific rules are followed.
Identify hazards and address unsafe work practices promptly.
Maintain a clean, tidy and well-organised workshop.
Ensure tools, materials and equipment are maintained, stored and available when required.
Work with the office team to improve workflow, communication, quality and productivity as the business grows.
You will ideally have:
A recognised qualification in metal fabrication, boilermaking or a related trade.
Strong practical fabrication skills and relevant workshop experience.
Experience leading tradespeople, apprentices or a small production team.
Experience across workshop fabrication and on-site installation or completion work.
Confidence reading drawings and providing practical feedback on designs and production requirements.
A practical, solutions-focused approach and the confidence to make decisions.
High personal standards for quality, productivity, safety and organisation.
An understanding of how leadership behaviour influences workplace culture.
The ability to work effectively with office, drafting and estimating employees.
A willingness to receive feedback, accept accountability and continue developing as a leader.
A three-day weekend every week.
A genuine leadership role with responsibility, authority and strong office support.
A clear pathway for career progression as the business grows.
A supportive and practical team environment.
The opportunity to influence how projects are designed, produced and installed.
