We are looking for a deeply technical leader for our Engineering Excellence team—a platform team that builds the shared tooling, platform capability and engineering practices the rest of oOh! engineering relies on: observability, resilience, testing, developer experience, and AI enablement. Our stack is event-driven and serverless-first on AWS (Go microservices, AWS CDK, Lambda / SQS / SNS / EventBridge / DynamoDB, with OpenTel / Datadog for observability).

You will lead and develop a team of 2–4 engineers while staying close to the technical work. These are strong specialists, so credibility here comes from genuinely knowing the domain—reviewing the hard designs and PRs, being willing to get your hands dirty when it counts, and setting the standard for what good looks like. We are deliberately open on where you are coming from. This will suit an experienced engineering manager who has remained hands-on, or a senior or staff engineer with real depth in this stack who is ready to take on a small team for the first time.

What you’ll be doing:

• People Leadership & Coaching: Lead and develop 2–4 engineers: 1:1s, career development, feedback and performance conversations. Coach Senior Engineers wearing the Technical Lead hat, without taking the work off them.
• Technical Direction & Architecture: Set technical direction for shared tooling and the excellence areas—observability, resilience, testing, developer experience.
• AI Enablement & Governance: Own our internal AI gateway—governed access to multiple models for every engineering team, with the security, usage and cost controls that make that safe—and set how we adopt AI in engineering more broadly.
• Hands-on Technical Quality: Stay close to the code (review the hard designs and PRs, and get hands-on where it matters most).
• Stakeholder Partnership & Adoption: Partner with other engineering teams as customers of this platform, and earn adoption of what you build through influence rather than mandate.
• Team Growth & Recruitment: Recruit and onboard engineers as the team shape evolves. 
• Team Culture & Visibility: Build a team culture with genuine psychological safety, inclusiveness, and high trust. Represent the team clearly to engineering leadership and remove organisational blockers.

What you’ll bring:

• Event-Driven & Serverless Depth (Essential): You have personally built and run production event-driven serverless systems, and can talk in real detail about the things that only come from having been on the hook for them—idempotency, ordering, retries and dead-letter queues, fan-out, eventual consistency. AWS-native experience (Lambda, SQS, SNS, EventBridge) is what we build on.
• Reliability & NFRs (Essential): Substantive reasoning about reliability and non-functional requirements—observability that goes past logs and dashboards to traces and correlation, and a clear view of how an SLA changes a design.
• Communication & Leadership (Essential): Clear, concise and direct communication. A genuine appetite for leading people (mentoring, growing engineers, giving hard feedback well, or a Tech Lead role with real people substance all count).
• Valued Experience (Plus): Breadth across AWS beyond serverless compute; AWS CDK and infrastructure as code (TypeScript); Go; internal platforms, developer tooling or golden paths; observability/resilience/testing practices established beyond your own team; SQL/NoSQL at production scale (Postgres, DynamoDB).

What success looks like (First 6–12 Months): Our engineering north star is Minimum Viable CD—the minimum set of practices that let us change production safely and continuously: trunk-based development, automated testing before merge, a single deployment pipeline per service, immutable artifacts, and rollback on demand. This team is how the organisation gets there. In your first six to twelve months, success looks like:

• Re-establish a quarterly delivery plan. Re-establishing capacity, ownership and a credible plan is the first task for this role.
• Minimum Viable CD moved from principle to practice in at least a couple of teams — the pipeline, testing and rollback capability genuinely in place, not just agreed.
• Observability people actually use — tracing and correlation across services, and DORA metrics visible enough that delivery conversations reference them.
• Practice adopted beyond this team — testing and resilience standards that other teams have taken up because they are useful, not because they were mandated.
• AI gateway usage that is governed and understood — teams using it, with cost and security controls holding
