We are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced candidate for the position of: College Counsellor
This is a full-time position commencing 25 January 2027. Please see the role description attached for information about this role and the selection criteria.
To be appointed to this position in the ACT, the applicant will need a current Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) card.
The safety, welfare and wellbeing of the students in our care are central to everything we do at St Edmund’s College. All appointments are subject to screening processes and successful candidates must comply with all child safeguarding policies.

About the role
The College Counsellor is a permanent full-time role (during term time only) reporting to the Principal through the Assistant Principal – Student Wellbeing. The College Counsellor provides individual and group therapeutic interventions to various members of the College community. They are a key member of the Student Wellbeing Team and play a significant role in providing professional support services for the support and development of the students at the College.
Key responsibilities
Provide individual counselling and therapeutic support to students experiencing personal, emotional, behavioural, or social challenges using evidence-based approaches
Facilitate group programs that support student wellbeing, tailored to identified needs
Assist students in developing strategies for coping, resilience, and positive mental health
Support the College's commitment to Restorative Practices as a framework for conflict resolution and relationship building
Contribute to the design and delivery of wellbeing and pastoral care initiatives across the College
Participate as part of the College's Critical Incident Response Team, providing immediate and follow-up support to affected students and staff
Work collaboratively with teachers, Pastoral Leaders, the Assistant Principal of Student Wellbeing, and College Leadership to identify and support students of concern
Engage and communicate effectively with parents and guardians to provide guidance on supporting their child's wellbeing
Refer students and families to appropriate external agencies and mental health professionals when required
Maintain accurate records and adhere to all legislative, ethical, and professional standards, including those related to child protection, privacy, and duty of care
About you
Hold appropriate qualifications in psychology, counselling or social work
Experience as a skilled counsellor working with children, young people and parents/caregivers
Experience and ability to respond appropriately in crisis situations and to students presenting with complex needs or high-risk presentations
High level of integrity with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and dealing respectfully with sensitive information
Patient and compassionate
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills including the ability to write and/or present to parents and staff
Ability to prioritise and manage workload and reorganise tasks to reflect changing priorities
Computer literacy skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and College databases/learning management systems, such as Synergetic and client management systems
Committed to supporting the mission of the College and the ethos of Catholic Education in the Edmund Rice tradition
Must maintain current ACT Working with Vulnerable People card
