Senior Governance Advisor

Gumala Aboriginal Corporation (GAC) works to alleviate poverty and promote self-determination for the Banjima, Yinhawangka and Nyiyaparli people of the Pilbara region in Western Australia.

GAC represents the Banjima, Yinhawangka and Nyiyaparli people of the Pilbara region in Western Australia. GAC was established in 1996 following negotiations with Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, to advocate for the collective interests of the Traditional Owners.

We are a membership-based organisation and serve around 2,000 Members across Western Australia, Australia and the world.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Senior Governance Advisor supports the Board and Management of the Gumala Aboriginal Corporation in meeting their compliance obligations; and ensures efficient administration across the Governance business unit.

 The aim of the role is to develop and lead high-quality governance across the business in order to achieve GAC’s mission, vision and strategic objectives. The role will be required to have an outstanding level of business awareness, contract management and governance principles.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Implementing, maintaining and reviewing internal governance standards of GAC, including risk register management.
• Facilitating and overseeing governance-related projects, including the convening of Annual General Meetings and Member consultation meetings.
• Coordinating and managing daily tasks of the two Governance Officers and the Governance team, ensuring compliance with procedures and guidelines.
• Liaising with the Executive Officer’s office and relevant external agencies to ensure governance and funding compliance.
• Preparing Board communications relating to governance, compliance, risk and associated matters for release to Members, stakeholders, regulators and the broader community as appropriate.

This position is based in East Perth with occasional travel to the Pilbara, and is being offered on an initial 12-month term.

ABOUT YOU 

• Tertiary qualification in Business, Law, Governance or relevant qualification.
• Demonstrated team leadership with the ability to motivate and coach team members.
• Knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements.
• Understanding of the CATSI Act
• Experience in managing compliance issues in a small to medium not-for-profit organisation.
• Ability to build rapport with all stakeholders of the business
• Strong organisational and planning skills
• Cultural sensitivity with a demonstrated understanding of and alignment with Aboriginal  cultural values
