The role

As the Senior Building Inspector, you will form part of a dynamic team responsible for investigating building complaints, conducting inspections, assessing compliance with relevant legislation and standards, facilitating dispute resolution, and providing expert technical advice to consumers, builders, industry stakeholders, and government agencies. You will play a key role in supporting the effective administration of the Building Services (Complaint Resolution and Administration) Act 2011 while promoting quality outcomes across the Western Australian building industry.

Drawing on your extensive experience in building inspections, construction, compliance, and dispute resolution, you will contribute to the timely, fair, and professional resolution of complaints relating to regulated building services and home building work contracts. Through thorough inspections, evidence-based reporting, and stakeholder engagement, you will help maintain confidence in building standards and regulatory processes.

Your technical knowledge of building practices, legislation, the National Construction Code, and acceptable industry standards, together with your experience in the building and construction industry, will be key to your success in this role.

You will bring to the team your expertise in building compliance assessments, complaint investigations, technical reporting, stakeholder negotiation, and legislative interpretation, as well as your ability to analyse complex issues, communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, facilitate dispute resolution, and provide sound professional advice. Your leadership, mentoring, and collaborative approach will support continuous improvement initiatives, contribute to branch strategies and policies, and promote high standards of quality, safety, and compliance throughout the building industry.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full-time or part-time) within the department and across the WA public sector for the next 12 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a permanent appointment, applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia at the time of application. Applicants with a valid visa to work and live in Australia for a specific duration may be assessed and considered suitable for similar fixed term vacancies that arise.

To be eligible for fixed term employment you must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia or have a valid visa to live and work in Australia for the duration of the fixed term employment at the time of application.

Should a qualification be required for this position, applicants must provide their certification and/or academic transcripts to verify relevance to the job requirements. Qualifications obtained outside of Australia must be provided with an assessment from the Overseas Qualifications Unit to ensure they meet Australian Standards (this is a free service).

• Diploma of Builders Registration or equivalent and entitled to be an unconditionally registered builder in Western Australia (or eligible by equivalent process in another Australian jurisdiction).

• Demonstrated ability to conduct inspections and prepare comprehensive, easy-to-read written reports on building compliance matters.
• Demonstrated experience in coaching others to resolve challenging or complex problems, with the ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders.
