Trade Assistant

The Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society is seeking a motivated Trade Assistant to join our Rolling Stock Maintenance team based in Quorn, South Australia. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside skilled tradespeople maintaining and restoring heritage steam and diesel locomotives, passenger carriages, freight wagons, railcars and workshop equipment.

About the Role

Reporting to the Rolling Stock Maintainer you will assist with:

·         Preventive and corrective maintenance of rolling stock and associated equipment

·         Major overhauls, repairs and restoration projects

·         Inspection, servicing and fault-finding activities

·         Workshop housekeeping and maintenance

·         Recording maintenance activities and inspections

·         Supporting other departments including Track, Carriage and Infrastructure teams when required

Essential Requirements

·         Mechanical trade qualification (Cert II or higher)

·         Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving skills

·         Experience working in a mechanical, maintenance or workshop environment

·         Ability to follow instructions and work effectively within a team

·         Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety

·         Ability to work cooperatively with volunteers and stakeholders

·         A positive attitude and willingness to learn

·         Current Australian Driver's Licence

Desirable Experience

·         Rolling stock, heavy industry, transport or rail experience

·         Steam or diesel locomotive maintenance

·         Forklift, crane, boiler or other high-risk licences

·         Rail industry qualifications

·         Interest in heritage railways, tourism, regional communities or not-for-profit organisations
