Freelance Social Media Content Creator

Perth is OK! is Western Australia’s largest independent digital media outlet, sharing stories that inspire, excite and connect people with the best of WA.

We’re looking for a Freelance Social Media Content Creator to work with our social and editorial teams, helping us tell interesting stories from around Perth and WA.

We’re after someone who is curious, has a good sense for what makes a story worth telling, and knows how to turn an idea, interview, location or written article into strong short-form video.

You might come from a journalism, media or content background. You should be comfortable researching a story, asking good questions, interviewing people and working out the best angle, as well as actually filming and editing the content.

You’ll need to be confident in front of the camera, including presenting and recording voice-overs, but this isn’t a personality-first role. We’re more interested in someone who knows how to tell a story well.

About you

Ideally, you’ll have:

• Strong storytelling instincts and a genuine curiosity about Perth and WA

• The ability to identify the most interesting angle in a story

• Experience researching stories, conducting interviews or working from editorial briefs

• Experience creating short-form video for Instagram, TikTok or similar platforms

• Confidence presenting to camera and recording voice-overs

• Confidence filming and producing content behind the camera

• Strong filming and editing skills

• The ability to turn written stories into engaging social video

• Good judgement around tone, accuracy and how stories are presented

• The ability to work independently and take ownership of a piece of content

• Strong communication and organisational skills

• The ability to meet deadlines consistently

• A proactive approach and comfort working in a fast-paced environment

• A driver’s licence and flexibility to occasionally work outside standard business hours

A degree in journalism, media, communications or a related field would be looked upon favourably, but isn’t essential. Relevant experience and a strong body of work are more important.

The role

Depending on the brief, you may be responsible for:

• Researching and developing story ideas

• Working out the strongest angle

• Conducting interviews

• Filming on location

• Presenting to camera

• Recording voice overs

• Editing short-form video

• Working from supplied scripts or developing your own

• Delivering finished content within agreed deadlines

This is a paid freelance role, with work provided on an ongoing basis depending on our content schedule and requirements.

Reliability is important. Much of what we do is time-sensitive, so being organised, responsive, and able to meet deadlines is essential.
