About the role
The Coalition of Peaks Secretariat is growing and we’re looking for an experienced communications specialist to join our team.
As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Organisation, the Coalition of Peaks is committed to growing and supporting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce in our sector.
We strongly encourage any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply for our roles.
About the organisation
The Coalition of Peaks is a representative body of more than 80 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled peak organisations and members who have come together to Close the Gap, in partnership with Australian governments.
We share a belief that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should have a meaningful say on policies and programs related to Closing the Gap through formal partnerships with Australian governments at all levels.
The Policy and Secretariat Team supports the work of the Coalition of Peaks, providing high level and comprehensive policy and strategic advice to Peaks Members, to support the implementation and monitoring of actions in the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
About the Role
This position is being offered on a full-time maximum term contract basis for 12 months from commencement.
The Assistant Director, Media and Communications is a key role that works collaboratively across all teams in the organisation to develop and deliver internal and external communications that explain and promote the work of the Coalition of Peaks to a range of audiences. The Assistant Director will develop and deliver the Coalition of Peaks’ communications strategy, including overseeing the production of all organisational communications.
The Assistant Director will work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation and externally with media, member organisations, government stakeholders, and partners.
About You
You will bring extensive experience in senior communication roles within the community-controlled sector or a similar not-for-profit, government or advocacy organisation. You'll be able to draw on your strong media experience to build and strengthen relationships with outlets, respond to media inquiries and pitch opportunities that support the Coalition of Peaks and its members to tell our stories.
To succeed in this role, you’ll also need well developed cultural acumen and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to produce communication materials, guidance and advice to support organisational objectives. As a small organisation, all our team members must be able to be flexible and work collaboratively with one another to support the organisation’s strategic goals and objectives.
To apply
Applicants should review the Position Description, which includes further details on the key duties and selection criteria, and submit:
· A current CV highlighting your experience and qualifications, including details of at least two referees; and
· A pitch demonstrating why you are the right person for the position (max two pages).
Closing date: Applications must be received by 11.59pm (AEST), Sunday, 6 September 2026.
We strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates.
