About the role
Established in 1979 by the Ballarat Aboriginal community in the Ballarat district, BADAC’s vision is to be the strongest voice and presence in the Ballarat area, supporting and respecting their people, enhancing our community, growing their culture and honouring their heritage. BADAC is the Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation (ACCO) for the Ballarat and District area, covering 4 local government areas (LGAs). The organisation is extremely proud of the contribution and support they have provided the local Aboriginal community over the past 40 years delivering a comprehensive range of health, social, welfare and community development programs to local Aboriginal people.
Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative exists to achieve self-determination for the Aboriginal community, enabling stronger families by ensuring equal opportunities in health, housing, education, employment and justice through a holistic and culturally relevant approach.
We currently have an opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed Finance Officer to join our dynamic team at BADAC, a large not-for-profit organization dedicated to making a positive impact in our community.

The role of the Finance Officer is to ensure the provision of support and assistance to the Finance Team Leader and the Chief Financial Officer in the completion of the day-to-day operations of the finance team. This includes but is not limited to Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Financial Acquittals, Budgets, End of Month and any other general finance or administrative duties as required.
The Finance Officer will be highly motivated with strong attention to detail; they will have a sound knowledge of financial concepts and a solid understanding of Aboriginal culture and an ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people.
Accounts Payable Function: including entering invoices, checking statements, making payments, updating supplier information.
Accounts Receivable Function: including raising invoices, sending statements, debt collection calls and emails, updating customer information.
Payroll Function: including reviewing time and attendance data, processing weekly payroll, updating employee files, payment of superannuation, payment of salary packaging, payment of any other deductions, understanding of the Workcover payments related to payroll, knowledge of workplace awards and agreements, understanding of leave provisions including long service leave and portable long service leave.
Financial Acquittals Function; including understanding contracts, submitting acquittals, progress reporting, understanding of flexible funding and brokerage funding.
End of Month Financial Tasks; including bank reconciliations, general ledger journals and reconciliations, reviewing and understanding financial reports.
Credit Cards Tasks; including request for funds process, signing cards in and out, coding transactions and monthly reconciliation of each card.
Daily Financial Tasks: including banking (both online and physically taking items to the bank), liaising with other teams around bank transactions (e.g. Medical, Early Years, Art Gallery, Reception), scanning and filing and voucher orders and reconciliation.
Complete any other financial or administrative tasks as required by the Finance Team Leader or the Chief Financial Officer.
Participate in ongoing professional development and training where required. Attend staff, community and stakeholder meetings when held during your normal working hours.
Maintain strict standards of confidentiality and act at all times in a professional manner in accordance with the BADAC policies and procedures.
Have the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people and be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of aboriginal culture.
Qualifications in Accounting, Payroll or Bookkeeping or alternatively at least 5 years’ experience in a previous finance role.
Demonstrated commitment to delivering positive customer experiences.
Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to deal effectively with co-workers, clients, families and members of the general public.
Have a strong working knowledge of accounting and payroll-based computer software (e.g. MYOB AccountRight, HR3 Payroll, Workforce TNA Time and Attendance)
An understanding of key finance functions like accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and month end accounting processes.
