Position Purpose

The Campaigns & Advocacy Director is an executive leadership role responsible for translating farmer leadership into economy-wide climate, energy and nature outcomes. Working closely with the CEO and Executive Team, you'll design and lead high-impact advocacy campaigns that shift public debate, build broad community support and give governments the confidence to adopt ambitious climate, energy and nature policies.

This role leads FCA's work beyond the farm gate—building campaigns that connect the experiences of Australian farmers with the national interest in food security, regional prosperity and climate action.

You'll bring together organising, communications, policy and strategic partnerships into coordinated campaigns that influence governments, strengthen alliances and reshape what is politically possible.

In this role you'll:

• Lead high-impact advocacy campaigns that shift public debate and influence policy outcomes.
• Design and deliver high-impact campaigns that influence public debate and policy outcomes.
• Build powerful alliances across agriculture, industry, business and civil society.
• Mobilise trusted farmer voices to advocate for practical climate, energy and nature solutions.
• Coordinate advocacy opportunities and ensure campaigns align community organising, communications and policy into a single strategic direction.
• Help build FCA into one of Australia's most influential farmer-led advocacy organisations.

We're looking for someone who has:

• Experience leading successful advocacy or public campaigns.
• Strong political judgement and strategic thinking.
• Exceptional stakeholder engagement and coalition-building capability.
• Experience working across the political spectrum to deliver policy outcomes
• Outstanding communication and leadership skills.
• A strong understanding of the issues that matter most for rural Australia. 

Agricultural experience is welcomed but not essential. We're looking for an experienced campaign strategist who understands how to turn community support into tangible outcomes. 

Selection Criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated experience leading successful advocacy or public campaigns, including strategy, theory of change, objectives, tactics, sequencing and measures of success.
2. Strong political judgement and strategic thinking, with the ability to identify opportunities, anticipate political and stakeholder dynamics, assess risk and focus effort where it can have greatest influence.
3. Demonstrated ability to influence policy and decision-makers, including effective engagement with governments, parliamentarians, political advisers and stakeholders across the political spectrum.
4. Exceptional coalition-building and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build productive relationships across diverse interests, including community, industry, business, civil society and government.
5. Ability to integrate organising, communications, policy and advocacy into coherent campaign strategies, creating alignment across an organisation around shared influence and policy outcomes.
6. Outstanding communication skills, including developing compelling narratives and advocacy propositions and communicating complex issues clearly and persuasively to different audiences.
7. Demonstrated leadership capability, including leading high-performing teams, contributing effectively to an executive team and building organisational alignment and momentum in complex environments.
8. Strong understanding of campaign strategy, organising and mobilisation, including turning community or stakeholder support into meaningful participation, advocacy and political influence.
9. Strong campaign delivery and management skills, including managing priorities, budgets, timelines, resources, partnerships, risks and evaluation.
10. Strong understanding of the issues and political dynamics affecting rural and regional Australia, and their connection to broader national economic, climate, energy and environmental priorities.

Desirable

• Experience in agriculture, food, energy, environment, regional development or natural resource management.
• Experience organising and supporting community or grassroots leaders as advocates and public voices.
• Experience leading national campaigns across multiple jurisdictions or political environments.
• Experience building cross-sector coalitions or unusual alliances across agriculture, business, industry, community and environmental organisations.
• Experience in climate, energy, nature, land use, food systems or agricultural policy.
• Existing relationships with relevant political, agricultural, industry, business, community and civil society stakeholders.
• Experience in a farmer-led, member-based, community-based or advocacy organisation.
• Experience with campaign evaluation, impact measurement and learning, using evidence and data to adapt strategy.
• Experience contributing to fundraising, donor engagement or strategic partnerships connected to campaign impact or organisational influence.
• Relevant tertiary qualifications in politics, public policy, communications, campaigning, law, agriculture, environmental studies, social sciences or a related field.
