The National Native Title Council (NNTC) is the peak body for native title organisations across Australia.  As a not-for-profit organisation, we provide a united national voice on matters of significance to the native title sector and advocate for the rights and interests of Traditional Owners.

About the role

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Finance Officer to support the Senior Finance Officer in the effective day-to-day financial administration of the organisation. This hands-on role is integral to ensuring the smooth operation of our finance function, delivering a broad range of transactional finance services and administrative support.

As the Finance Officer, you will be responsible for key financial processes including accounts payable and receivable, bookkeeping, payroll preparation, grants and funding administration, and financial records and compliance support. By providing high-quality operational support, you will enable the Senior Finance Officer to focus on strategic financial management, reporting, compliance, and organisational planning.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

• Verify that all invoices, travel allowances, and expense reimbursements have been approved in accordance with the NNTC’s financial delegation policy prior to processing payment.
• Raise and issue invoices to customers and funding bodies as directed by the Senior Finance Officer or relevant senior staff.
• Reconcile all bank accounts on a weekly basis, with particular attention to the Weel and Business Credit Card accounts.
• Reconcile the accounts payable ledger and clear outstanding items.
• Reconcile the accounts receivable ledger and resolve discrepancies.
• Assist in preparing and processing fortnightly payroll in line with applicable awards and contracts.
• Assist with tracking income and expenditure against grant agreements (data entry and record-keeping).
• Support the implementation and maintenance of finance systems, software, and internal controls.
• Provide ad hoc support to the Senior Finance Officer as required.

Qualifications

• Formal tertiary qualifications (Diploma, Undergraduate or Postgraduate) in bookkeeping, accounting or a related field.

Experience & Skills

• Minimum of two years’ experience in an accounts payable, accounts receivable, or bookkeeping role.
• Demonstrated ability to process transactional data accurately and within required timeframes.
• Experience with bank reconciliations and maintaining financial records.
• Proficiency in Xero and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
• Experience with Employment Hero or a comparable HR/payroll platform is desirable.
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with a solution focus.
• Sound time management and organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• Ability to work under the direction of the Senior Finance Officer with appropriate autonomy on routine tasks.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
• Knowledge and understanding of the culture of First Nations people.
