Heavy Diesel Mechanic

About the role

Fraser Coast Sand & Gravel is seeking an experienced Heavy Diesel Mechanic to join our engineering and maintenance team. This is a full-time position based in Hervey Bay, Queensland. In this role, you will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of heavy diesel equipment and machinery used in our mining and quarrying operations. You will play a critical part in ensuring our fleet remains operational and safe, directly supporting the productivity and efficiency of our business.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and servicing of heavy diesel engines, including oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid top-ups

• Diagnose and repair mechanical faults in heavy vehicles and equipment, utilising diagnostic tools and technical knowledge

• Conduct planned preventative maintenance schedules to minimise downtime and extend equipment lifespan

• Inspect equipment and machinery to identify wear, damage, and safety issues, documenting findings accurately

• Perform major repairs including engine overhauls, transmission repairs, and hydraulic system maintenance

• Maintain detailed maintenance records and service logs for all equipment serviced

• Ensure all work is completed in compliance with safety regulations, industry standards, and company procedures

• Liaise with operations teams to schedule maintenance activities and minimise operational disruption

• Assist in training and mentoring junior maintenance staff as required

What we're looking for

• Formal qualifications in diesel mechanics or heavy vehicle mechanical engineering, or equivalent relevant experience

• Minimum 5+ years' experience as a Heavy Diesel Mechanic working with mining, quarrying, or similar heavy equipment operations

• Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel engines and associated systems

• Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems, transmission systems, and electrical systems in heavy vehicles

• Competency in using mechanical tools, diagnostic equipment, and workshop machinery safely and effectively

• Current Heavy Vehicle Licence (HV) or willingness to obtain one

• Current Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) understanding and commitment to safety protocols

• Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail

• Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team

• Reliability, punctuality, and a positive work attitude
