Intermediate Tax Accountant

Powell Enterprises is seeking an experienced and motivated Intermediate Accountant to join our growing team.

This role is suited to an accountant who has developed a solid foundation in public practice and is ready to take greater ownership of client work. You will work across a diverse portfolio of individuals, companies, trusts and other business structures, preparing compliance work while developing your advisory and client management skills.

You will work alongside our senior accountants and client managers, with a clear opportunity to progress as your technical capability and client management skills develop.

• Prepare individual, company, trust and partnership income tax returns.

• Prepare annual financial statements for SMEs and other business clients.

• Prepare and review BAS and IAS.

• Prepare tax planning calculations and assist with year-end tax planning.

• Complete CGT calculations, depreciation schedules and other supporting tax work.

• Review client accounting files and identify coding, reconciliation and compliance issues.

• Reconcile balance sheet accounts, loans, payroll, GST and other key accounts.

• Assist with Division 7A, FBT and other business taxation matters.

• Liaise directly with clients to obtain information and resolve accounting and taxation queries.

• Liaise with the ATO and other government agencies where required.

• Maintain accurate and complete working papers supporting work performed.

• Work with our bookkeeping and offshore accounting teams to ensure jobs are completed accurately and efficiently.

• Identify opportunities to improve client structures, processes and financial outcomes.

• Assist senior accountants and client managers with more complex taxation and advisory matters.

• Manage allocated jobs and ensure work is completed within internal deadlines.

• Maintain a high standard of accuracy, communication and professional presentation.

We are looking for someone who:

• Has approximately 2–4 years' experience in Australian public practice accounting.

• Has a strong understanding of Australian taxation and accounting principles.

• Can prepare financial statements and tax returns with limited supervision.

• Has experience working with companies, trusts, partnerships and individuals.

• Is confident using Xero and cloud-based accounting systems.

• Has strong attention to detail and takes ownership of their work.

• Can manage multiple jobs and deadlines effectively.

• Communicates confidently with clients and team members.

• Is comfortable asking questions but can also research and resolve issues independently.

• Wants to continue developing technically and progress within an accounting firm.

• Holds or is working towards a relevant accounting qualification such as CA, CPA or IPA.

Technical ability is important, but we also place significant value on accountability, communication and initiative.

The right person will not simply process jobs. They will take responsibility for their client work, identify issues before they become problems and continually look for ways to improve their knowledge and the service provided to clients.
